Mouth Breathing and its Effects on a Child’s Health

Mouth breathing isn’t just a habit—it can cause real problems for a child’s dental health. Here’s how:

1. Changes Face & Jaw Shape

  • Can make the face long and narrow.
  • May lead to a weak chin and misaligned teeth.

2. Crooked Teeth & Bad Bite

  • Teeth may not grow in the right position.
  • Can cause changes in the bite and also leads to crowding of the tooth.

3. More Cavities & Gum Problems

  • Mouth breathing dries out saliva, which protects teeth
  • This makes it easier for cavities and gum infections to develop. It also causes bad breath.

4. Speech & Swallowing Issues

  • Can affect how kids speak and swallow.
  • Some may develop a tongue thrust (pushing the tongue forward while swallowing) which may further worsen the bite. This may also cause a pain in the temporomandibular joint later.

Poor Sleep & Health Problems

  • Mouth breathing can lead to snoring and poor sleep.
  • Kids may feel tired, cranky, or have trouble focusing.
